Greater Manchester Branch Past Events

Unfortunately this summer, due to unforeseen circumstances,  we have not been able to offer a branch meeting. We sincerely apologise and hope to see you all in the new academic year.

You can pencil the following events in your diaries for the next academic year:

Wednesday September 29th at 4:30. B 4.3 The University of Manchester Ellen Wilkinson Building. People Maths (Bob Vertes). People mathematics uses people to form the moving pieces of a mathematical activity, be it a puzzle, a sum, a diagram or a demonstration. These activities have the potential for rich mathematical exploration and investigation. The emphasis is on discussion within the group taking part.

Saturday 19th November 10:30  B 4.3 The University of Manchester Ellen Wilkinson Building. Mathematics and art (Rosa Archer). We will reflect on how mathematics can be creative and inspire and be inspired by art. We will investigate how mathematics and art are related in a variety of ways. Mathematics has itself been described as an art motivated by beauty. Mathematics can be discerned in arts such as music, dance, painting, architecture, sculpture, and textiles. In this session we will focus in particular on the visual ats. We will demonstrate some engaging activities that we believe will inspire learners.  Participants are encouraged to share their reflections and to bring any of their own activities to share.

Saturday 11th February 10:30  B 4.3 The University of Manchester Ellen Wilkinson Building. Mathematica proof (TBC). Many believe that proof is what defines mathematics. In this session we will reflect on the role of proof in school mathematics. As for all branch meeting we will demonstrate some engaging activities that we believe will inspire learners.  We will encourage participants to share their reflections on such activities and to bring any of their own activities to share.
