Graduate Certificate in Mathematics Education

Graduate Certificate in Mathematics Education as a Route to a Masters Module in Mathematics Education

  • Are you teaching mathematics in a primary or secondary school?

  • Are you trying to raise standards in mathematics?

  • Would you like to extend your own appreciation of the nature of mathematics and the learning and teaching of it?

All teachers in primary or secondary schools are invited to study for a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics Education (Double Award) in association with The Mathematical Association and University College Chichester.

Rationale

This module is designed to enable you to examine perceptions concerned with mathematics and mathematical learning in the context of the mathematics curriculum and involves you reflecting on and extending your own mathematical knowledge and skills. You will further develop your critical appreciation of the validity of mathematical arguments, both written and oral and to appreciate the nature of proof in the formal mathematical sense to support conjecture.

Objectives

  • To demonstrate and articulate a view of mathematics as a dynamic body of knowledge and processes;
  • To undertake, observe and record the creation and interpretation of an area of mathematics or mathematical activity;
  • To gain skills of deeper reflection and analysis on aspects of the learning and teaching of mathematics.
