The Association exists to bring about improvements in the teaching of mathematics and its applications, and to provide a means of communication among students and teachers of mathematics. Its work is carried out through its Council and committees. Seven committees are established by the Rules of the Association:   Branches Committee,   Conferences Committee,   Editorial Board,   Professional Development Committee,   Publications Committee,   Publicity and Membership Committee,   Teaching Committee. The Council has the power to establish other committees. The Council produces an Annual Report on the work of the Association.

The Council manages the Association; its members are the trustees of the charity. It is governed by the Rules of the Association; and it determines the Regulations of the Association.
