What is the Mathematical Association?

It was formed in 1871 to work for the improvement of mathematical education. It is represented on all major bodies concerned with mathematics education and can claim to have wide influence through its members and activities.

Who are the members?

Teachers in primary and secondary schools, further and higher education, advisers, inspectors, practising mathematicians and students. There are also institutional members.

What do I get for my money?

One of six categories of membership depending on which periodicals you choose to take and all the benefits of full membership, with generous discounts for individuals and students. The MA publishes a comprehensive range of periodicals, books and other resources. It also supports a range of meetings, conferences and other services for its members:

  • an annual conference where you can meet colleagues in an informal atmosphere, attend workshops and seminars, relax and simply enjoy mathematics,
  • local branches,
  • the opportunity to work in small groups investigating a specific aspect of mathematics or teaching, often resulting in the production of teaching materials or publications,
  • journals to help you in your work,
  • a termly newsletter,
  • occasional free reports and teaching materials,
  • one third discount on the price of most publications,
  • access to the Association's library,
  • access to the Association's problem bureau.

Which journals do I receive?

All members receive MA News, Mathematical Pie (including its Teachers Notes and Newsletter), conference information, details of new publications and other general information. In addition, all members receive at least one journal depending on which of the six categories of membership is chosen.
