Professors Marcus du Sautoy and Caroline Series Elected FRS

The Mathematical Association warmly congratulates Marcus du Sautoy and Caroline Series on being elected Fellows of the Royal Society in April 2016.

Marcus is the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. An eminent group theorist, he is also well-known as a populariser of mathematics, giving talks and presenting programmes on radio and television. Marcus is a former Royal Institution Christmas Lecturer and was the MA President in 2012-13.

Caroline’s research in hyperbolic manifolds, Kleinian groups and dynamical systems, has been conducted largely at Warwick’s University’s Mathematics Institute, where she is now Emeritus Professor. She was a founder member of European Women in Mathematics back in 1986, and more recently she became the first vice-chair of the International Mathematical Union’s Committee for Women in Mathematics. Caroline gave the after-dinner speech at the MA’s Annual Conference in Norwich in 2003.

The election of Marcus and Caroline to Fellowship of the Royal Society is the ultimate recognition bestowed by their peer mathematicians; it is well-earned, if not overdue.
