Inspiring Mechanics Teaching: a teaching Mechanics PD day

A one-day professional development event for all those who will be involved in teaching mechanics in the sixth form from September 2017.

The Mathematical Association in cooperation with Leicester Grammar School is delighted to invite you to apply for a day of professional development on teaching mechanics at sixth form level.

The focus of this day will be on teachers learning the mathematics of mechanics and its subject pedagogy. It will be particularly useful for those teachers who will need to teach it at A level for the first time from September 2017 and for those teachers who wish to refresh their knowledge.

1030-1130       Session 1 Tom Roper

Tom has taught mechanics in schools and to PGCE students and physics undergraduates at Leeds University. He was involved in the Leeds Mechanics in Action project from the beginning, writing much of the material. In this first session he will look at some of the conceptual difficulties that students and teachers have and how the use of some simple, easily available apparatus can help with the teaching of the subject.

1140-1240       Session 2 Carl James

Carl teaches mathematics and further mathematics at Leicester Grammar School. He will concentrate on forces, equilibria and equations of motion in which he will help delegates develop their intuition for such situations (as this that can often be the barrier in otherwise confident mathematicians) and to look at some good ways of solving such problems.

1330-1430       Session 3 Howard Fay

Howard will focus on some of the common misconceptions and mistakes students make in solving problems such as including non-existent forces or omit forces. They may fail to analyse which principles are needed and they need a lot of time to be confident with work and energy questions. His experience in examination work will reflect the necessity for well-labelled, large diagrams, explaining which mechanical principles have been used, checking that their answers make sense, etc. starting with a framework for answering questions and emphasise understanding at all stages.

1440-1540       Session 4 Tom Roper

Tom will bring the day to a close with some examples that can be used in the classroom to enthuse and motivate you and your students in the study of mechanics.   These will include, amongst other things, the application of mechanics to human motion and will require some audience participation.

The cost of the day is £65 for members of The Mathematical Association, £90 to non-members who will receive a £25 voucher redeemable against membership. All members of a school with Institutional Membership are entitled to come at the members’ price.
