Anxiety with Tom Hunt
During the last two decades the concept of maths anxiety has received increased attention, including many strands to the empirical investigation of it. In my session I will discuss research findings that provide insight into the development of maths anxiety and ways in which it may be maintained or exacerbated, for example. I will also address the specific ways in which maths anxiety might impact maths performance, including attempts to understand the mechanisms that underpin the relationship, such as the influence of intrusive thoughts. I will note the range of paradigms that have been adopted to study maths anxiety and, finally, I will consider some brief strategies that appear to be effective in reducing it.
