Number 76 Autumn 2021 HANDS AND FACE These giant hands, indicating welcome and the acts of giving and receiving, are a sculpture in steel by Rick Kirby. After all the challenges of the past 18 months we should be thinking about how we can welcome, give and receive what we can at the start of this academic year. Rick was an art teacher for 16 years before concentrating on sculpting in stone and then steel. The hands are at Woodbridge and the nearby Sutton Hoo Helmet is 1.8 metres tall and has a mass of 900 kg. THE 2021 IMO This year the 62 nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) took take place virtually in St. Petersburg, Russia in July. The black dots indicate the UK students’ scores amongst all the competitors’ scores. IMO is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for high school students and is held annually in a different country. This year the UK team (in alphabetical order) of Mohit Hulse, Isaac King, Samuel Liew, Yuka Machino, Daniel Naylor and Jenni Voon finished 9 th out of 107 and won two Gold and three Silver medals, with one Honourable mention.
