Website
The MA Website was established in March 1997 by Bob Francis. In October 1998
the management of the site was taken over by Peter Thomas. On the 12th January
1999, the MA Website moved to a new site provided in partnership with Research
Machines plc. On the 23rd January 1999, the Council of the Association gave
responsibility for the management of its Website to its Editorial Board and
co-opted Peter Thomas as Editor. Since the 5th March 1999, the site's address
has been www.m-a.org.uk.
The webspace is generously provided by RM and forms part of its EduWeb. The site includes the following
features: a hit counter (provided by www.bcentral.com/fastcounter)
and a location map (provided by www.streetmap.co.uk); The Mathematical
Association acknowledges, with gratitude, the free provision of these
features.
In early 2000 the MA received funding under the DfEE's Subject Associations'
Website Initiative. Among other things, this funded the establishment of the
MA's own bulletin board; prior to that the MA made use of facilities provided by
NRICH for which it is very grateful. It also made possible the inclusion on the
MA Website of downloadable versions of articles from MA periodicals.
A special meeting was held on 19 May 2001 to consider how the MA
Website can help the MA in its role in supporting mathematics in education.
As a result of the meeting, plans are under way for a major redevelopment and
relaunch of the MA Website. In the interim, there will be a selective
introduction of new features and formats. So over the next few months you can
watch the MA Website evolve.
Members interested in becoming involved in the development and running of the
MA Website are invited to contact the Editor. In particular, the present Editor,
Peter Thomas, demits office at the Annual General Meeting in 2002 and
individuals interested in taking on this role are very welcome to contact him to
find out what is involved.
Unless stated otherwise on a page (or if the material originated outside the
MA), the pages on the MA Website are © The Mathematical Association and are the
responsibility solely of the MA.
The Editor
welcomes comments about the site and suggestions for its development.
