Key Note Speakers


 

Bob Sawyer is currently Headteacher of All Saints Catholic High School. Prior to this he was Regional  Director for the National Numeracy strategy in the East region. Bob has an established career in mathematics and mathematics education and he has taught mathematics in both the primary and secondary phase. He has worked in several LEAs and was head of the advisory service in Stoke-on-Trent Bob is best known for his work on interactive teaching and School Self Review and Evaluation. His most recent contribution to school improvement is the development if the DfES Strategy for ICT.

He is currently part of the mathematics curriculum review at All saints in which the department is developing an approach called ‘plug teaching’ to support the accelerated delivery of KS3.


 

 

Sir Peter Williams is Chairman of the National Physical Laboratory. He holds non-executive director positions at WS Atkins plc, GKN plc, Advent VCT1 plc and Advent VCT2 plc. Sir Peter graduated from Cambridge University with an MA and PhD in Physics. He initially pursued an academic career, first at Selwyn College, Cambridge and subsequently at Imperial College, London. After a period with VG Instruments Ltd he joined Oxford Instruments plc in 1982. He became its Chief Executive in 1985 and was its Chairman from 1991 until his retirement in 1999. Sir Peter has previously held the posts of: Master of St. Catherine's College, Oxford; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Museum of Science & Industry; President of the Institute of Physics; President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science; and President of the Association for Science Education. He was also a member of the Post-14 Mathematics Inquiry Steering Group.


 

 

 
Doug French is Lecturer in Education with responsibility for the Secondary PGCE Mathematics Course and the Mathematics Enhancement Course.  Having taught mathematics in secondary schools for over 20 years, including a long period as head of department in a large comprehensive school in East Sussex, he came to Hull in 1987. He was one of the writers of the widely used SMP 16 to 19 A level mathematics course and has contributed to a variety of publications on a wide range of topics in mathematical education. He has had two major books published in recent years: Teaching and Learning Algebra in 2002 and Teaching and Learning Geometry in 2004. His interests include the role of mental methods in learning mathematics, the problems of learning algebra and geometry and the classroom use of ICT in its many forms as a tool for developing understanding and extending problem solving powers. Doug is an active member of the Mathematical Association at local and national level. He is President of the Association for the year 2006-07 and will continue in that role to help the Association to influence developments in mathematical education at all levels.



 

 

 

Jane Imrie is Acting Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics. Until joining the National Centre, Jane worked as National Subject Leader for Mathematics in the DfES Standards Unit, where she led the development of the post 16 mathematics teaching and learning framework ‘Improving learning in mathematics’. She has acted as a consultant in post-16 mathematics for organisations such as LSDA, QCA, DfES and others. Jane taught and managed mathematics in schools and further education for 23 years and currently serves on both the Mathematical Association Council and NANAMIC committee.

Steve Abbott is an HMI and past President of The Mathematical Association. Steve has wide experience in the classroom as well as a broad perspective gained from his current role in reporting and monitoring school performance and attainment.  He is an inspirational speaker who talks authoritatively, but always with a practical dimension, about classroom mathematics - the joys, the pitfalls; what works, what doesn't; what might be.
