Doug French was an inspirational teacher who loved and lived mathematics. The mathematics world lost a real champion when he died in September last year, but his legacy continues through the many students and teachers whose passion for the subject was fired by his teaching.
The Mathematical Association is hosting an afternoon of mathematics in memory of Doug on Friday 9th April 2010 at the University of Manchester, following the BCME7 conference. As a former MA President and career-long member of the Association, Doug worked relentlessly to support the teaching and learning of mathematics. He took great delight in spotting mathematics in the most everyday occurrences and was expert in making mathematics accessible to a wide range of people through his books and his teaching.
The Association invites you to join us in celebrating Doug's life through doing mathematics together. The afternoon will start with a mathematical buffet lunch from 1pm to 1:45pm, followed by an informal afternoon sharing mathematics, and will close at 3:30pm. There is no limit on numbers attending, but if you would like to be there for lunch, it would be helpful to know this by Thursday March 25th, in order to confirm numbers with the university. Please email email@example.com if you would like to attend.
