Howard Groves, a long-standing MA member, receives an MBE.

Howard Groves, MBE

The Mathematical Association congratulates Howard Groves, a long-standing member, on being awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list. Howard taught in New Zealand before taking up a position at the Royal Grammar School Worcester in 1982. He remained at RGS until his retirement in 2011 but continues to give talks at neighbouring schools. The MBE citation focuses on Howard’s considerable contribution to UKMT over a period of 20 years. During this time, his unique talent for setting challenge questions and his leadership of the teams preparing the Junior, Intermediate, Senior and JMO papers, was only matched by his diligence, organization and  engaging manner. Bill Richardson commented that “without his input, it is difficult to see that the material produced by UKMT would be as good as it is”. In fact, it would be difficult to estimate the number of youngsters who have wrestled with questions that Howard has had some part in designing. What a contribution, what a legacy! Finally, if you are one of those members who look forward each autumn to the release of the next MA calendar, then you should be grateful to Howard for supplying many of the images.
