Secondary
Education Mathematics Conference, run by The Mathematical
Association
hosted by Stirling University
Saturday, 20th September 2008
The 3rd MA
One-Day event for Scottish secondary mathematics
teachers is booking now.
The event will attract around 220
delegates who will be treated to a wide range
of talks, presentations and workshops. The keynote
address will be given by Dr Paul Andrews, Cambridge
University. One of the biggest attractions of
a one-day conference is the opportunity for colleagues
from all areas of mathematics education to meet
each other and exchange information, ideas and
opinions. We hope to attract Scottish secondary
school teachers as part of their CPD entitlement
and a certificate of attendance will be issued.
The MA stand will be available for the purchase
of publications and posters.
The deadline for receipt of booking
is the 30th June 2008.
Any applications received after this date will
be allocated a placed on a reserve list on a first
come first served basis. To receive booking details,
an application form and programme, please email
sales@m-a.org.uk
or telephone Emma on 0116 2210014. We look forward
to seeing you there!!

The
Marches Network
(formerly "Mathematics in the Marches")
This is the
new name for the Marches ATM branch, because we
are now much more than an ATM branch. The organising
committee comprises representatives of both the
ATM and MA, five mathematics consultants from
local LEAs, three initial teacher training tutors
and local teachers. The NCETM is also represented
on the committee, because we are delighted to
report that we have received a grant of £1000
from the NCETM. This will be used to cover travel
expenses for our workshop leaders and expenses
related to providing a venue and refreshments
for our meetings. We shall still need to charge
a small entrance fee in order to cover our costs.
The next meeting will be on the
morning of Saturday 4th October
2008 in Telford. There will be a choice
of workshops suitable for primary and secondary
teachers on the theme of Mathematical Creativity.
If you would like to know more about
The Marches Network or know someone who wants
to be added to the mailing list please contact
Barbara Ball at barbara@ludlowballs.force9.co.uk.

Collaborative
Teaching Practice and the History of Mathematics
9:30am
- 4:30pm, 26th September 2008
The London Mathematical Society, De Morgan House
57-58 Russell Square, London WC1B 4HS
This conference
is planned as a workshop-based experience and
a discussion forum for all teachers, teacher advisers
and trainers, interested in the uses of the history
of mathematics in the mathematics classroom. It
is based on a work developed by a group of teachers
who collaborated over the past few years on trialling,
developing, and using history of maths resources
in primary and secondary settings, and will
aim to equip delegates with some useful tools
and resources ready to use in a classroom.
For more information,
please
download the conference programme here.
