The Liverpool Mathematical Society was founded in 1899 and has
been affiliated to the Mathematical Association since 1929. We organise
an annual programme of meetings on Mathematics and Mathematical
Education, and are responsible for a sixth-form lecture and for
running the Open Challenge competition for senior pupils.
Open Challenge
In an effort to broaden the appeal of the Challenge, it now consists
of several short (and hopefully easy) questions followed by several
more demanding questions, only the last one being open-ended. Some
of the easy questions give a lead to the later ones. The Open Challenge
and the sixth-form lecture are organised by a subcommittee chaired
by the Schools Secretary. Additional members would be most welcome,
as would suggestions for questions for next year's Open Challenge
and for future sixth-form lectures. Anyone interested should contact
the Secretary in the first instance.
Programme Please see the
branch website for details
of the current programme
The venues for these meetings are now
purposefully split between the University of Liverpool; Liverpool John Moores
University, and Liverpool Hope University College. Car parking is available at all three
sites: at the University of Liverpool visitors do not require a permit
for a late afternoon or evening meeting; at John Moores University
access is via a security barrier but no permit is required. The
visitors' car park is clearly signed at Hope College. Many of our
meetings are suitable for sixth-formers, who are most welcome. It
would be appreciated if teachers planning to bring a group of students
would contact the Secretary in advance.
Future Events The Society is always looking to attract new
members and ideas for speakers for future meetings. Any ideas such
as names (and contact addresses if possible) of speakers, topics
of interest, etc. are welcome from any member. The ordinary meetings
generally range from educational aspects of mathematics through
to current research topics in both pure and applied mathematics
and previous speakers have come from the Secondary and H.E. sector.
Appropriate speakers from industry and commerce are also welcome.
Please don't be shy! Any ideas/requests should be forwarded to the Secretary as soon as you like, preferably
by e-mail.
